Hornets Nest

Check out this glob of danger! All these hornets were sitting calmly on the nest vibrating their wings, and tucking in for the evening. There were two separate nests -the large one and the smaller new one right next door (guess there was a break in the community?) These guys are always on my porch pollinating all my plants but their nest is out back under the eaves of the shed. We are very good friends. :) Do you feel scared...like maybe I got too close? I probably did.

I love bees and wasps! I had a thriving nest of big black carpenter bees for years and years in a pile of wood in the garage, everybody thought I was nuts. They finally moved away on their own. The only time we bother the wasps is if they nest under the eaves too close to the doors, otherwise it's live and let live! They land on the floating water plants in my ponds and drink water, it's beautiful to watch.

Hey Susie -

I usually leave them alone too - one good way to get rid of a nest being built without using chemicals is spraying them with soapy water. It sounds too simple to be true- but I had to do it once and it worked!
