Mammoth Sunflower Seed Heads

Holy Taleedo! Remember my leaning tower of sunflower? Those bad boys went to seed, and man their heads got huge. ;)

Seed saving is so much fun!
PS- Anyone ever roast their own sunflower seeds before, I am open to some tips?!

XoXo

I've roasted them in the oven before, ~250F and a small amount of oil + salt.

I suspect this would work really well in a solar oven.

(My sunflowers always get eaten before they get knee-high).

Thanks Erik! The temp of oven roasting was my main concern, cause I don't want to burn them on accident. Gluten free sunflower seeds are really hard to find.

Who eats yours at knee high. the ground hog?

Yeah, just let them dry a bit first ... basically until they start falling off the head.

I'm not sure what ate my sunflowers, I suspect it was the deer. They all had their heads lopped off one night :)

We have ground hogs that eat them if ya live in the city- but the hard part is getting birds not to eat them once they start going to seed - i used plastic nets that a bunch of lemons came in at the store, and pulled them over the mammoth heads- and it worked.

Girl, you crazy. If you like good old Tony's, why not try a little of that on the seeds? Works very well on pumpkin seeds...

Hey Colleen!
I bet you would like "Joe's Stuff" - I have only ever seen it sold in the Jax Brewery in the french quarter (New Orleans) - but maybe they sell it in BR stores by now? You can take any dish and turn it into something cajun with the "Joe's Stuff", makes the awesomest rice and beans eva'. :)

Gratuitous-
I am starting to think I am about to go all 'bull in the china closet'. ;)

Mokihana -
I have ideas for the MCS calender, but mine were actually not very humorous, I wanted to look like a fairy princess or some other fantastical wackiness. :) Wishing I had my donkey for it, so I could take the picture while riding it... I am going to make it a unicorn "hat" for it to wear. LOL

PS to ya'll both- thanks for mentioning the picture finally!

Not sure what you mean by the bull/china thing.

As for the calendar, why not continue with the nudity theme and incorporate your leetle burro? I'm thinking Lady Godiva...

Gratu -
Sadly although I am a trained artist who minored in art history, i had to look up who the hec Lady Godiva was...
http://publicani.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/lady_godiva_by_john_collier1.jpg

and that is EXACTLY the kind of image i was thinking of (except with a faux unicorn horn for my donkey). The Calender is a nudey calender project except discreet artsy nudity, it's to raise awareness about Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. Which is really just code for 'I feel sick cause chemicals are gross'.

The bull in the china closet means going a little crazy in a way that breaks the illusion of our precious things. Is that too deep?

Perfect example. I always suspected that Baba Bort is a zen master.

We should all keep pen and paper next to the toilet, in case of brilliant moments.

You've got a typo there Leslie. You misspelled "movements."
