On An Impulse : BUNNIES!

I am a 100% sucker. For fur, for fuzzy, for scared, for adorable, for baby animals...
I went to our local Farmers Co-op today to pick up some hay for JuJu the donkey, but when i got inside the building to pay there was a cage next to the counter full of little rabbits! The signs on the cage said were that they were "meat rabbits" and also "just in time for Easter"?? I didn't care, all i knew was i was going to take the two cutest ones home with me. Not for meat. And not for Easter.
The little solid black bunny was greatly loved by the woman at the check out counter who put them in a box for me and walked the box to my truck just to send her loving goodbyes to the terrified fuzz muffin. (Although she was incredibly sweet on the bunny, she made some off putting remark about naming it "little sambo"--- i always find this word to be racist. )
The black bunny is most friendly, the spotted one likes to thump his foot, zip around and send me signals of fear and loathing.
....
Even though in recent times i have started to lose the illusion that I am somehow saving animals from a worse fate (cause mainly how can i judge the fate of nature, really?) ... but still there is a part of me that wants to take all the animals home with me, love them all, make them all comfortable, make it so they have a peaceful life. Maybe it's a biological/maternal thing, they are all my babies , I really just can not help myself!
...
What would ya'll like to name the two bunnies? (NOT sambo (explained above)! and Salt & Pepper has been suggested!)

Fungus And Screamin' Trees

I feel like this picture of me at the rock is a pretty good still shot of everything that has been going through my mind as of recently. There's no words to put my finger onto my personal feelings exactly - but maybe there is a general search for a more solid direction, searching right out into the wilderness. The way most people my age feel when they put on wedding rings, have babies and buy their first home. Somehow what I search for will need to be different, whether I chose it exactly or not.
When I was overlooking this rock the other day I started to hear screaming. Alot of screaming - the first sounds were startling, the second un-nerving, and the third was something borderlining the fear of death. It had to be a small bird of prey, crow or rabbit in desperate need...and I headed out along the trail to find it. What I found along the way of death screams were alot of beautiful fungus...
*
This first one was even blacker then in the picture- a dark dirt like disguise.
This next mushroom was bright red and soooo micro tiny in the ground... freakin' neato.
And one of my new favorites is this stuff that looks like coral growing on land instead of underwater. :)
I looked for a long time, following the injured and upset animal's cries - I even went home and got a snack and came back again. As much as it wanted help, it didn't want it from me personally and was evading my every step with a perfectly hidden agenda of it's own. Sometimes even though I know I can not be of any help and that nature knows what it's doing, I still can not help my own human nature by offering some kind of service. There's a balance that can be achieved by humans, where we can be care givers and not just destroyers (and sometimes one aids the other) - I realize we are not entirely out of place in the wild. It's like we've just forgotten what to do.
I never found the scream's origin, it felt like they were coming from the trees themselves, and everytime i got to one tree the next one would scream for help. Dramatic?! Yeah, whateva'...
at the very end I found fresh bunny poop and realized what it was and all was silent.

Injured Baby Bunny

Awwwwww. Poor yittle bunneh got caught by a cat... until I scooped him up into my hands and fell in love. Normally when a cat has another animal in it's clutches I don't interfere in fear of leaving the injured party to a long slow bleeding death & therefore being a waste completely. All things change when a tiny baby bunny's soft fur touches my hands, with black pearly eyes that S.O.S for mercy and freedom.
The injuries appeared to be superficial to me, in that I saw no puncture wounds but rather some exposed skin and ripped off fur in a few places. I wiped them with a wet rag and put aloe vera on the tender skin - for lack of any better meds to sooth the terrified ball of cuteness. Apparently in the world of animal rehabilitation rabbits are not a very big deal, being called the "popcorn of the forest" and usually the effort isn't made to save them. Whatevs. I am saving it.

So it's survivor warrior name I've given it is Desmond. Not very fierce but that's what came to me, and after Desmond got a name it also pooped, pee'd and perked up quite a bit. YAY! Hopefully the skin will repair quickly enough to put the fuzz muffin back out into the woods to live out a more natural life & death cycle then a house cat's blood lust.

Nature Calls

There is a wooded area downtown Asheville NC just a few blocks from my house that I really enjoy biking and walking in. It breaks my heart a little because I miss living out in the majestic boonies of Madison County in the tiny converted tobacco shed/house. (Note to Universe: Would like to get back to living in the woods ASAP...Thanks!)
Rotten trees make beautiful monuments and a snug home for a gazillion bugs & critters.

Wonder who lives in that hole!?!

That is my bike "The Cajun Knuckle" resting with the trees...

This bunny very patiently waited till I was finished taking a few pics of him before hopping along and chewing some leaves.
Do you prefer the city life or roughing it out in the woods- and why?
